From Negative to Positive:
How Relabeling Can Shift Mindsets and Energize Students
It’s TurnAround Thursday, and I’ve got an Energy Hack that is going to blow your mind. We’re talking about relabeling, and let me tell you, it’s a game-changer.
It’s Week 4, and we’re diving into the third of three Energy Hacks and today’s is …
Relabeling Increases IQ – EQ – SQ
So this week’s focus is the transformational power of Relabeling. I know, I know, it sounds a little out there, but trust me, this Energy Hack is the real deal
Let me start by telling you about a little experiment I did with my class my third year of teaching.
I had a group of kids who were struggling, and it seemed like they were carrying around these labels that were holding them back.
So, I decided to change the narrative.
I renamed my class from the “biggest baddest class” to the “biggest best class” the school had ever seen. And that’s when things started to shift.
I started looking at the kids and the labels that
other teachers had given them with new eyes.
One student, was physically and emotionally disabled.
I knew there was so much more to him than than his “crazy” label implied and I started using new labels for him in my mind’s eye – Welcome, Wanted, Quirky.
And guess what?
He started to change. It took some time, but he went from acting out every day to feeling safe and thriving in the classroom.
This relabeling thing isn’t just some fluffy concept. It’s about rewiring beliefs and expectations, and letting people step into their full potential.
And let me tell you, the results have been nothing short of miraculous.

Here’s this week’s TurnAround: you already know what it is. That’s right. Relabel!
Now, I know what you’re thinking – how do I start relabeling? Well, it’s all about creating a safe space, building trust, and then introducing this powerful tool. But once you do, get ready to see some serious change.
First, I want you to write down the names of each of the 1-3 students you’ve been working on to reach and teach.
Second, I want you to write down their existing labels on the left hand side of the paper.
Third, on the right hand side, relabel them.
How? Don’t over think this. Either write down the exact opposite of how they are currently behaving OR accept them exactly the way they are, right here, right now.
Hold your new labels in mind as you go about your day, every time you see them, think of their new labels and notice your energy change and their defensiveness toward you dissolve.
I’ve seen it transform kids, parents, teachers, and even entire classrooms. It’s about accelerating IQ, EQ and SQ, and creating an environment where everyone can thrive. So, if you’re ready to shake things up and see some serious change, it’s time to get on board with the relabeling game. Trust me, it’s a game-changer. And I’ve got the stories to prove it.
The bottom line is this – relabeling is a practical solution that offers reliable outcomes. It’s a step-by-step approach that maintains harmony and can win back time by accelerating learning.
So, let’s start relabeling and start the school year on a high note. Let’s make it happen, people! And remember, you’ve got this!
